The basic format for the Design Guidelines and Standards is as follows:

1. Policy Statement describes a desired state of condition of the design element being discussed (referenced by number).

2. Design Guidelines and Standards Statement is typically performance oriented, describing a desired design treatment (referenced by letter).

3. Supplementary Information includes other requirements, or provides an expanded explanation.

4. An Illustration may be provided, to clarify the intent of the Design Guidelines and Standards.

The numerical ordering of the Policies, Guidelines and Standards does not imply a ranking of importance. The emphasis placed on individual standards varies on a case-by-case basis, depending upon the context. See illustration to the right for an example.
