Open space land shall be acquired, maintained, preserved, retained and used only for one (1) or more of the following purposes:

(1) Preserving or restoring natural areas characterized by or including terrain, geologic formations, flora or fauna that are unusual, spectacular, historically important, scientifically valuable or unique, or that represent outstanding or rare examples of native species;

(2) Preserving land or water resources in their natural or traditional state, scenic areas or vistas, wildlife habitats or fragile ecosystems;

(3) Preserving land for passive recreational use, such as hiking, photography or nature studies and, if specifically designated, bicycling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, fishing and/or recreational camping not to exceed seven (7) consecutive days;

(4) Preserving agricultural uses and land suitable for agricultural production;

(5) Shaping the development of the Town, limiting urban sprawl and managing growth;

(6) Maintaining a defined edge for the Town;

(7) Preventing encroachment on floodplains and riparian areas; and

(8) Preserving land for its aesthetic value or contribution to the quality of life of the community. (Prior code 2.26.060)
